Doi Suthep (Suthep mountain) rises above Chiang Mai city. It is located only a short drive to the west of Chiang Mai making it a quick and accessible escape into nature. The distance from the city to the top of Doi Suthep is 15 km.  At viewpoints, you can see some spectacular views of Chiang Mai city and at a high of 1000 meters above the sea level this is mostly deciduous forest and evergreen forest above this height.

At the foot of the mountain is Chiang Mai ZOO and at the peak Wat Prathat Doi Suthep (Suthep temple). The mountain also offers some easy nature trails, waterfalls and tribal villages. It’s possible to reach the peak by cycling or even walking on the road or the steps leading from the ZOO to the temple.

Culture and history info

Wat Prathat Doi Suthep (Suthep temple) is one of the most important Buddhist temples in the north of Thailand and therefore, deserving of its prominent location above Chiang Mai city. The temple has been here for 628 years  and the park was established in 1981. The name of the park is Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

Doi Suthep is also home to Hmong tribal villages with distinct culture and traditions.
